Grey Pursuits

I am but a little thing,

A little thing with grey pursuits

I think in poetry; I speak with ones that do not converse

Chit-chat is for tea parties with women in formal skirts

And hair puffed up too high to suit their age, stature or bling.

I am but a little thing,

A little thing with grey pursuits

I believe in words, but actions fail me- actions, they’re untrue.

As I have seen none that ever quite pulled through

You can say something painless, but no action wouldn’t sting.

I am but a little thing,

A little thing with grey pursuits

I don’t hope for the best, but I expect it nonetheless

But little things matter to me, more than anything else

Scrawled handwriting wins me over, I wouldn’t need a ring.

I am but a little thing,

A little thing with grey pursuits

I see the world for what it is, and I cannot say I love it

But wonder it is, how men can rise from all that’s dirt and grit

Wonder it is, how birds can die, and their children can still sing.
